Each morning, at the break of dawn, hundreds of workers file into the factory. They are straight-backed, silent and alert as they take their places at their machines.
The workers are divided into three groups. The first group sews garment parts together. The second group trims threads and loose fabric. The last group – the quality control inspectors – scrutinises each garment for defects.
This morning, as on every other day, the workers go about their tasks with clockwork precision. The only sound in the factory is the whirr of the sewing machines.
The factory is located in an industrial area on the outskirts of Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. It is one of the many garment factories that have sprung up in the country in recent years.
The factory workers are paid very little – just a few dollars a day. But for many of them, this job is a step up from working in the fields or in a brick kiln.
The factory owner is a man called Mohammad Yunus. He is a thin, wiry man with a faint beard and piercing eyes. He watches over his workers with a hawk-like gaze.
